SPAMMED to Death!

Dear Microsoft Support,

Because I posted inquires to solving Entourage problems, just a week
ago, I am now being wiped out with all kinds of SPAM. I am getting 40
to 80 e-mails a day all with tags using some form of reference to
Microsoft. Some of the subjects include:
1-Microsoft Network Mail
2-Microsoft Secutity
3-MS Network Message
4-MS Corporation
5-Internet Email Storage
6-Net Email System
and on and on...
If there is any way to shut this stuff off, please advise. If not, I must
change my email address and then remenber to never try to get your
help.
Oh, by the way... many many of these mesages have .exe attachments.
Being on a Mac, I am impervious to these... but still I am being
innodated with garbage.
What is your advice? Just change my e-mail address?

Dear Microsoft Support,

The newsgroup is not an official Microsoft Support medium.
Because I posted inquires to solving Entourage problems, just a week

You are not alone in the recent spam attack.....

Your address was harvested from this newsgroup just like it would from any
other newsgroup. I suggest using a special address for posting on ngs in the
future.

Firstable, stop posting with your valid e-mail address.. use a fake
one..
Secondable, I changed my e-mail address and it worked. I just added a
number to it.. It doesn´t matter where in your e-mail and you will be
safe until the bots figure out how to grab them.
It has worked for me as I am spam free..

Thanks to you eMacMan and Dianne. I assumed as much about
changing the name. I've used my real addres before in Mac forums and
never had this problem. There are some people not liking
Microsoft...Geeee...

Thanks again.

Okay, I set up a new address, but now as I try a reply in a newsgroup, there
is no way to designate what account I want to use -- no from field. I don't
see a preference in the Newsgroup Settings menu, or under Preferences. What
am I missing? Even if I could designate that account, that account will fill
up with junk mail on the isp's web server and I'll have to delete there, no?
One thing I'll say, Entourage's junk mail rules at least keep most of it
where it's easy to delete, in the junk folder.

Martha,

Here's an approach you may want to try:

I just discovered (thanks to eMacMan's tip) that since my news server
(msnews.microsoft.com) doesn't require authentication/login, I can create a
totally spurious "account" (in my case, "[email protected]") that doesn't
exist and for which I don't have to pay. I then subscribe to the news
server, designating the bogus account as my address of origin for that
particular news account.

This works great. Now the evil software that crawls around newsgroups
trolling for valid e-mail address at which to hurl spam won't get me, at
least not through this newsgroup, anyway.

Martha,

Do not use Entourage as a news reader, it is a terrible one. Use Thoth,
which is a real news reader. There you can create a fake address for
posting.

S

Sam Elowitch

While I agree that Thoth is a better choice for serious newsgroup users, the
more casual participant may find that Entourage offers the convenience of
reading your news right inside your e-mail client, where you frequently find
yourself anyway.

two suggestions;
1/ Sign up for a spamcop.net account and filter all incoming mail through it
(removes spam, viruses etc into a 'held' box) - POP3 or IMAP support (and
also cleans Hotmail as well) and a good webmail client
or
Sign up for an account with SpamEater.com - cleans your POP3 account of spam
and viruses every 10 mins or so (first month free trial)

2/ Use a sneakemail.com account for posting (free unlimited trial) - that
way if one address gets harvested, simply throw it away and use another (but
your 'real' account doesn't get revealed)

BTW.... I don't get a cent for these recommendations, just use the
service(s) and think they're great

Hey, it worked. Now, does anyone know whether over time I will stop getting
all those "Microsoft" spammails, or will the harvester forever remember my
real email address and plague me? If they will fade away, how long might I
expect that to take?

I suspect that your old real address will be remembered. Luckily I knew to
set mine up before I posted anything here.

I don't understand why newsgroups require email addresses in the first
place. It isn't like anything legit from the group gets mailed to you.
Unless you want to post your address to someone.

Joe.
