Spelling won't work

I just got a new computer loaded with Windows XP. For
some reason (and I'm sure there is one)the spell check
won't work in Outlook Express. I can see the "spelling"
function in the pull-down in tools, but it's that light
gray color and won't allow it to be accessed. Why is
that? Can it be accessed? My spelling is atrocious as it
it, and this would be very helpful if it would just work!
