Spontaneous download of duplicate messages

M

meelar

I was sitting at the computer last night and suddenly Entourage
decided to download copies of EVERY email from my POP server...Now I
have a couple thousand duplicate messages on my machine, and if I
delete them they will get deleted from the POP server.

Annoying!!! Anyone seen this happen?

One other thing. All of the new messages have different icons to the
left of them in the inbox view...i.e. the icons look like little green
"pipes" with an envelope "growing" from it (how's that for a
description?). Whereas the emails I originally had--the ones that
have been downloading for months--have what looks like a little
envelope with a piece of lined paper behind them. I'm sure this is
significant.

Can anyone explain this?

Did you just do a rebuild of your Entourage database? In a rebuild Entourage
looses the data that says what has been downloaded and will download
everything left on the server.

There are scripts that deal with duplicates.

If you select the Option in Accounts to leave mail on the server this can
happen.

Messages with the envelope indicate it's an email that has been downloaded
and is not on the server. The one with the green pipe indicates mail is on
the server. There are 3 states of this icon. See this page for explanations
of this icon.

Hmmm...

I didn't rebuild the database, so that can't explain the duplicates!

I'll take a look at the scripts...thanks!

As for the little icons, since I've always left copies on the server,
I guess the little envelopes must have shown up once Entourage became
confused about what was on the server and what I had already
downloaded!

Thanks for the help!

Sometimes this happens from some action on the server for your ISP. Whatever
causes it, it's a huge pain. The scripts help a lot in cleaning up the
duplicates.
