It won't be introduced in E2004; if it comes it will be in the next
major upgrade, which is expected in 2006.
Actually no announcement at all about when the next major version will be
released has been made. Given that Microsoft needs to both incorporate the
new XML file formats for Word, Excel and PowerPoint (and wait for the to be
ready in Office Windows first), and also make all the adjustments needed for
the new Intel Macs (and wait for them first too) as promised by the Mac
Business Unit General Manager Roz Ho at WWDC, plus incorporate new features,
I wouldn't be surprised if it takes until 2007 before the next version is
out. Or perhaps they may need to get a MacIntel version out as soon as
possible but without many of the new features that it would otherwise have
contained - they may need to wait for the next upgrade after that. If so,
you'd have Steve Jobs to thank for that change in schedule: Mac Office will
have to keep up to date with structural changes, as they did with v. X for
OS X.
Microsoft has said they hope
to integrate Spotlight but there have been no details announced, nor is
it likely there will be before the update is released. You might expect
an announcement around the time of Macworld San Francisco next January;
that seems a logical time, but it is just my guess.
I would imagine that the Spolight code would be included in the next (binary
processor PPC-and-MacIntel-supporting) version no matter when that comes
out. They had to wait for Apple to fix something to make it possible, but
that should be in place by then.
