Stale Hotmail Account

B

Brian H

Not sure how it happened, but I have a stale Hotmail folder displayed in folder list in outlook. Whenever I try to delete or close the folder it an error message that says

"Operation failed, the object could not be found" appears. How can I get rid of it.

Not sure if it's related but I'm also not able to turn of "work offline", when I try it comes back with a message:

"The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart Outlook."

Which as you might guess, doesn't go away when I restart outlook. As a patch I've re-worked the email properties to work offline, but that's not the way it should work and who knows if there are unknown side-effects.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks, I'm using 2002 SP2. Basically I've got a stale folder in the folder list (labeled Hotmail) and I can't close it. What is more curious is the fact that it doesn't show up as an email account in either the data management menu or the email account list. Thought there might be some way to clean things up. I also appear to be "stuck" in offline mode.

How would I create a new profile? I'm hoping you don't say something like start over and reconfigure all your options, rules, pluggins and settings. Is there a way I could set up a new one while keeping the old one intact so I can reconfigure gradually?

Outlook 2002 supports two or more profiles - control panel, mail - add a new
one.

You can try to delete the file from the registry - since it's not a ghost,
it should work. Browse HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles for the keys that
have the hotmail pst name in them and delete the key from the left side.

Tried the registry trick but it didn't work. One additional detail, the "Deleted Items" folder (under hotmail registers as having 7 unread messages, however, when I expand the folder there are none available. Could it be getting stuck trying to delete the items it "thinks" are in the deleted items folder? Could that be the object from the error message that isn't found? Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your reply (once again). I'm afraid I've already done that. I've also noticed that I have a OutputHotmail-0000006.pst that is probably got the remnants of the hotmail folders. It seems that somehow outlook proper can't seem to synchronize the two anymore. When I rename the file the hotmail account no longer displays the folders. Could this somehow be a read/write permission on the pst folder. They've just upgraded my account to allow local admin privileges. Could this have something to do with it? Thanks again for your help.

Thanks, I'm using 2002 SP2. Basically I've got a stale folder in the
folder list (labeled Hotmail) and I can't close it. What is more
curious
is the fact that it doesn't show up as an email account in either
the
data
management menu or the email account list. Thought there might be
some
way
to clean things up. I also appear to be "stuck" in offline mode.

How would I create a new profile? I'm hoping you don't say something
like
start over and reconfigure all your options, rules, pluggins and
settings.
Is there a way I could set up a new one while keeping the old one
intact
so I can reconfigure gradually?

Which version of outlook? Did you try a new profile?

Not sure how it happened, but I have a stale Hotmail folder
displayed
in
folder list in outlook. Whenever I try to delete or close the
folder
it
an error message that says

"Operation failed, the object could not be found" appears. How can
I
get
rid of it.

Not sure if it's related but I'm also not able to turn of "work
offline",
when I try it comes back with a message:

"The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the
problem
persists, restart Outlook."

Which as you might guess, doesn't go away when I restart outlook.
As
a
patch I've re-worked the email properties to work offline, but
that's
not
the way it should work and who knows if there are unknown
side-effects.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
