starting page numbering on page 4

I have a 55 page document, and I can't have any page
numbers on the first 3 pages (like title pages). I want
page 4 to say "page 1" - I can get that by using section
breaks, but I can't get the page numbers off the first 3
pages. Any ideas?

First be sure that the footer button "same as previous section" is turned
off. It sounds like there will be no page numbers on pages 1 thru 3 and
pages 4 will be numbers page 4. You do know how to tell the footer page
numbering tool to start on 4 and not 1 right?

Marc,

* First make sure you have a Next Page Section Break at the start of
each new section.

* Go through each footer, making sure 'Same as Previous" on the
HeaderFooter toolbar is off for all.

* While you're at it, remove any page numbering that is already there.

* Also on the HeaderFooter toolbar, make sure Different First Page is
off for the title pages that precede the main section. To access
Different First Page, click the book icon and go to Page SetUp.

* For the main section, assuming you want no numbering on the first
page:

- Check Different First Page
- The footer should now read "First Page Footer - Section ... "
- On the HeaderFooter toolbar, click the hand holding the # sign.
- In the 'Start at' box put in 1.
- Although the numbering now starts at 1, there should be
no number in the first page footer.
- Go to the next footer and put in the page number
- It should be 2.

Footers can be quite nasty until you get the knack of it. - Bruce

place a section break after each of the first 3 pages.
Then go the the 4th page before entering the page
numbering commands.
