Storing Company rather than Person-centric contact data

I'm sure there is a simple answer to this, but either I'm being dim or
haven't found it yet.

I am wanting to store custom data in my contacts that relates to their
company rather than the people as individuals. This is for the purpose of
tracking the status for each of the companies represented in our contacts
folder. Of course I could store this "status" information in each of the
contacts representing a company, and do it that way, but that would mean
going around an updating every contact in the same company should the
company status change.

I won't to be able to set or change the status once and then be able to see
that information in whatever contact belonging to a company I open. It would
also be very useful to able to see the current status for all companies
represented in the contacts folder for reporting purposes.

Is any of this possible?

TIA, Peter

Thanks for your very quick reply. Hadn't expected one so soon!

I've tried what you suggested and yes, that is a way of solving my problem.
The additional problem is with around 2500 contacts and several hundred
companies represented it is going to take ages scrolling through the list
every time to find the correct associated "General" contact record for each
company. Probably a stupid question, but is there a way of automating this?

Thanks, Peter

Create a general contact for the Company (with the general phone number or
someting). Then create a link from the contact to that company. To create a
link;
Open the Contact-> Insert-> Item...-> select Contact-> set option to Insert
as shortcut-> press OK

Yep, a reply too quick perhaps as I've got you a better solution;

Create the general contact for the Company
Open the general contact
Click on the Contact button in the left corner below
Select your Contacts for that company

The links will be both ways :)
