Strange problem referencing cell

I have a spreadsheet that has a series of cells which record race
results, and more cell that accumulate the race scores

I input the competitors name to the score chart and the races have a
reference like =b4 to fill in names for the races - it's a
pre-determined format.

In the score chart I've been using some other cells to work out
ranking and also put the race results in to text strings.

I noticed an error in the races and so in any cell, for example C71,
if I try to alter it by typing the correct cell (change b5 to b4) or
even drag the cell highlighted tothe correct place, in the destination
(C71 etc) it now says =b4 instead of being blank or putting the
correct name in

Any ideas what the heck is wrong?
