Strange worksheet name translation

D

Dan Wilson

Good day. I am using Excel 2002. I have a workbook with
13 worksheets, one for each month and a total. Each
worksheet is labeled with the first three characters of
each month, Jan, Feb, Mar, etc.

On the total worksheet, I am referencing the totals of
some activity on the monthly worksheet. EX: Total!A5
contains the formula =Jan!D7 This brings in the total of
cell D7 on the January worksheet.

I discovered that the cells in the total worksheet are
showing zeroes for unpopulated months. While trying to
change the formula to = if(Jan!d7=0,"",Jan!D7), I
continually get an error message from Excel that
unrecoverable error has occurred and Excel is shutting
down. The error occurs as soon as I enter the second
occurrance of Jan in the formula.

Through experimentation, I have found that if I make the
formula read = if(Jan!D7=0,"",Jan!$D$7) by selecting cell
D7 on the desired monthly worksheet and hitting the F4
key, I do not get the error.

Can anyone tell me what is going on? If more details are
necessary, let me know.

Thanks, Danno...

Not sure what happened ..

Perhaps just use the simple : =Jan!D7, etc and
suppress zeros from showing on the "Total" sheet via:

Tools > Options > View tab > Uncheck "Zero values" > OK

This will give a neater look. No more visual clutter from
extraneous "zeros" arising from unpopulated cells

Alternatively, maybe try something like:
=IF(ISBLANK(Jan!D7),"",Jan!D7)

I'd usually just go with the former
