Styles randomly changing in series of Word XP docs

I am working with a client on a series of documents where formatting (styles)
will randomly revert back to previous versions. We have both tried all the
common (and not so common) fixes - checking for a linked template (no),
checking compatibility options (didn't fix), checking AutoFormat options
(didn't fix). We checked for linked styles as well. No other documents (and
she works with thousands) are having this problem. ANY ideas, however hair
brained, are welcome.

Are you copying styles from the older versions? When you paste, you should
use paste special--unformatted text.

These are newly created documents. While we could try retyping the documents
(they are relatively short), my concern is that this will waste a lot of time
and not fix the problem. I'm trying to determine what else might be the
cause.

Not sure. I know I don't like the way Word creates its own styles. I would
turn off some autocorrect features.
