Substitue text strings

Hi,

EXCEL 2000
XX positions in column (A) shall replace values
in same position in column (B) with XX
(see below example)

Tried search, substitute, vlookup, but no luck.
Any suggestions will be MOST appreciated

Values in column (A)
AB111XX/10
AB111111XX/20

VALUES in column (B)
....
AB11177/10 = AB111XX/10
AB11188/10 = AB111XX/10
AB11199/10 = AB111XX/10
AB11111177/20 = AB111111XX/20
AB11111188/20 = AB111111XX/20
AB11111199/20 = AB111111XX/20
....

i'm still not sure what you're trying to substitute. (but that's
probably just me). Maybe you can explain the logic behind this
substitution with a little bit more detail

=LEFT(B10,FIND("X",A10)-1)&"XX"&MID(B10,FIND("X",A10)+1,255)
