Subtotal not working?

I am using the Data-Subtotals function on a list of sales
statistics. The data divides and the label Total appears,
but the value that appears in the subtotal field is zero.
The formula looks correct, but the value does not appear.
I cannot figure out why? Any pointers?

=SUBTOTAL(9,F2:F3)

what values do you have in F2 and F3. any chance they are text values?

The cells may contain numbers that are being recognized as text. To
convert them, you can use one of the techniques shown here:
