Sudden failure of Outlook97 to send mail (still receives)

I have a home network that has been functioning without problems until 2 days ago, now I can no longer send e-mail (can still receive without difficulty). After much investigation I have discovered that I can send/receive fine in Outlook Express (vs 6) but Outlook 97 still fails. Double checked SMTP addresses, including adding a new service. Also removed O97 and re-installed, remembering to re-install Internet Mail patch. Still having intermittent (~90%) send failures to SMTP but fully receiving all e-mail. Outlook Express still sends and receives fine

Same problems introduced two computers, no known changes or updates to either. Anyone have an idea about this
