Suddenly can't send email

I

infomaniac

As of about 2 days ago I can't send emails in Entourage from any of my
accounts. I didn't change any settings, nothing weird happened, my ISP
claims nothing changed at their end, etc. Another computer on our
household network has no problems sending from their email accounts
via Entourage. I have no problem sending if I go to the trouble of
accessing my email via Safari instead of Entourage (from the same
email accounts that are in my Entourage). When I try to send from
Entourage I get error "-3253 Connection to the server failed or was
dropped". There is nothing wrong with our internet access in general.
And I have no problems receiving email to my same accounts in
Entourage. Only the sending is a problem. My smtp settings are the way
they should be -- I also tried other smtp settings that I know might
be okay and they don't work either. Thanks everyone!

Switch Identities in Entourage under Entourage in the menu bar. Create a new
Identity with account info. Make sure to set to leave mail on server in
Account window under Options tab. Does it work? If yes, then there is a
problem with your database.

If it does not work, then create a new User in System Preferences and open
Entourage there with a new Identity. Use same settings as above. Does it
work? If yes, then move your current Identity to Shared so you can access it
for testing in the new User. Does it work there? If yes, then there is a
problem in your User's folder. If not then it's a system wide problem.

If it's system wide and you are running Tiger, apply the latest Apple combo,
restart and Repair Permissions. Test to see if the problem goes away.

You might need to download the combo updater from Apple and run it again
rather than using Software Update. Doing so overwrites potentially
problem-causing files. Several users have reported this fixed some odd
problems they were having with Entourage. Combo updaters will install on the
same version as they¹re applying‹no need to roll back or do a clean install.

Hi Diane,

I already tried rebuilding my database (the diagnostic option didn't
report anything but I did it anyway for something to do!).
I'm already 10.4.11 with my Tiger.
Magically (??) when I powered up my computer yesterday morning,
sending worked fine all day and night.
Surprise (??) when I powered up my computer TODAY, sending is again
NOT working, PLUS the other computer on our network that had no
problem sending when I had problems the other day well TODAY it ALSO
cannot send.
Again, receiving is no problem.
If you have any other suggestions, I welcome them, but I really think
it's our ISP (Sympatico) messing with outgoing email servers whenever
they want to, grrrr! It's so discouraging that they either don't know
what the bleep they're doing or that they won't tell us what's going
on.

Thx,
Barb

Use tcpflow to monitor your traffic. Here are the short and simple
instructions on using tcpflow:

1. Download the Mac OS X version here (freeware).

cpflow-0.20.dmg.gz>

2. When you install, you will not find a tcpflow window, nor an icon on
your dock. tcpflow is designed to work in the background.

3. To run the test for email, quit all other applications that might be
connecting to the internet like your browser, ftp client.

4. Copy/paste in this command in the Terminal or use the script ²tcpflow
activate² (see below):

sudo /usr/local/bin/tcpflow -i en0 -c

5. Now try to send an email and watch the traffic in the window of the
Terminal. You should see what is happening.

6. For an example see this page:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/tcpflow.html#example>

Script to activate tcpflow:

Download this script and place it in your User's Script folder.

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/downloads/scripts/tcpflow activate.zip>

Place the script here:

Users --> Library --> Script folder

If you activate the Script Menu in the Finder you can easily access the
script there. To activate the Script menu, go to your Applications folder in
the Finder. Select the AppleScript folder and open AppleScript Utility. ˆ
Show Script Menu in menu bar

Select the script to automatically start the Terminal with the correct
command. Enter your password and tcpflow will be activated. Next use
Entourage to send a test message.

Using the script makes it easy to use tcpflow for subsequent testing.

Did you check the recent thread "Any Sympatico.ca Users Have email advice?"
in this newsgroup?

The poster there wrote
--------
I went into the "advanced settings" and when using POPHM and SMTPHM I
need to check that it should use "secure SSL" and on the sending "the
server requires authentication"
--------

So, open your Sympatico account in Tools > Accounts. Then, click the
"Advanced Sending Options" button and check the button that "SMTP server
requires secure connection (SSL)" and "SMTP server requires
authentication"/"Use same settings as receiving mail server". Click OK to
save the settings.

I have the same problem - just can't send out from one machine in the
house after months of no problems on the same settings

I am a new iMac OS 10.5 user. Got the machine 2 days ago and have all
the same symptoms....can recieve and can not send. I talked to
Sympatico and they are convinced it is not them. Is it possible that
a patch to any of the OS versions is somehow blocking traffic via port
25...that being the Sympatico required port for smtphm.sympatico.ca?
Entourage and the stock email system have the exact same issue with
sending.

Be sure you update to 10.5.1. There were some security issues addressed in
this update.

The OS would never block port 25.

Try checking the Advanced Settings in your Account:

Use "secure SSL" and on the sending "the server requires authentication"
