Suddenly Outlook Clients Cannot Connect to Exchange

Around 2:30 we start getting reports from users saying Outlook is telling
them the Exchange server cannot be contacted. The affected users are
dispersed and have no commonalities. Different OU’s, GP’s, subnets, even one
of the admins was affected. By the end it looked like everyone but a handful
of people were affected, but it’s hard to say as most had gone home.

My computer always worked, I could log off and log back in and had no
problems. If I went to another computer it wouldn’t work. Some users we
tested with would log off, log back in and it would stop working.

We restarted everything we could think of, DCs, the Exchange box, the
unmanaged 3Com switches in between the computers and the server.
I tried reinstalling TCP/IP and Outlook. Workstations could ping and view
the shares on the Exchange box and vice versa. Telnet to port 135 on the
Exchange box showed the port as not blocked. All updates were applied to
boxes and removed from others.

To confuse things even more Outlook Web Access (OWA) works for all the users.

The only thing I can think of is a problem with RPC or something relating to
the Global Account. Any more ideas?
