Jo,

if you insert a line in the middle of the data then the
formula will adjust, but if you insert it at the end it
doesn't.
Why does it do this? I don't know, but I'd guess it might
be because you're actually inserting at Row 11, which
isn't part of the formula.
Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can explain...?

Hope you can help. I am an Excel novice. I have a column
containing numbers say A1:A10 that I sum in row 11.
Inserting a row above row 11 to add data doesn't get added
into the sum. Is there a way to have the formula
automatically pick up this inserted row with data?
