I would like to be able to see events from my personal calendar in the same view as events from a public calendar. I'd like to either have them be superimposed or merged. Is this possible?

Sorry, no, this isn't possible. Please be sure to let Microsoft know
you'd like to see this feature in future versions by using the Help -->
Send Feedback mechanism in any Office application.

You can create a Custom View, which shows events from both your Calendar
[On My Computer] and your Exchange Calendar, but this will only show you
a list and not display in Daily, Weekly or Month views.

Hope this helps!

Well you can't superimpose them in Entourage, but you can in MyDay.
If you want to merge them, you can create a custom view for one of the
two that would list all events (eg: contains a OR does not contain a),
select them all and use the Move command to move them to the other
calendar.
