Swimming Gala Results

I'm trying to create a workbook for our scout swimming gala. We enter the
times of each competitor in cells on a new sheet for each heat. I need to
calculate first second and third positions for the finals. ANY help would be
great. Unfortunately timescales are very short so please help this newbie.

To calculate 1st, 2nd, 3rd, you can use SMALL.

1st place
=SMALL(A1:A10,1) you could also use =MIN(A1:A10)

2nd place & 3rd place
=SMALL(A1:A10,2)
=SMALL(A1:A10,3)

If you want to return the name of the swimmer who turned in the best times
you can use index/match or vlookup like

=INDEX(B1:B10,MATCH(SMALL(A1:A10,2),A1:A10,0))

with names in B1:B10,for 2nd place.
