To make outlook your default folder (if it doesn't ask you when you open it) do the following.
1. On the menu bar select Tools, Options...
2. Select the "Other" tab.
3. Check the "Make Outlook the default program fro E-mail, Contacts, and Calendar box.
Also make sure it's set as the default here: Control Panel | Internet
Options | Programs tab.
