Everytime i press ctrl and 3 a # symbol appears instead of a pound sign all
of the other keys are fine except that one!!!!

You need to go to Control Panel - Regional and Language settings and alter
the default settings to English UK..

To get there and understand what you are doing or about to do, go to START -
HELP and SUPPORT and type

KEYBOARD LANGUAGE

Then click on the Regional and Languages overview in the list of topics on
the left of the window.. follow the instructions as given..

It's SHIFT and 3 not Ctrl.

sorry my error i was meant to type shift not ctrl even wen i press shift and
3 i get a £

It sounds like you have set the US English keyboard rather than the UK
English keyboard on the operating system. Try Control Panel, Regional
and Language.
