Sorry. My earlier message should have read, "I use a G4 Mac laptop
and was using Entourage 2004 connected to an Exchange server". Every
few minutes a tremendously annoying dialog box appears which informs
me that it is synchronizing. I have tried a number of things, but
there does not appear to be a way to disable this announcement. It
caused me to discontinue using Entourage in favor of Apple's Mail app.
Has there been a fix for this problem in the interim?

For me this message only appears if the main mail window is closed
(but Entourage is still running). If I minimize the mail window
instead of closing it, I do not see this message.
