Syncing calender between 2 macs

D

dmm

Both my desktop and my powerbook are runninng Tiger 10.4, and Office
11.2.3. My goal is to sync my address book and calendar between these
two computers. I have turned on all the sync services for dot mac and
entourage.

My address book is syncing fine, but my calendar is not showing up for
Entourage in the powerbook. However, I have opened iCal on the
powerbook and the Entourage calender IS showing up there. How do I get
Entourage to sync it?

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Entourage should automatically sync with it. If you create new events in
iCal, they have to be in the "Entourage" calendar to show up in Entourage's
calendar. Similarly, if you create new appointments in Entourage, they will
only show up in that "Entourage" calendar inside iCal. If that doesn't
answer your question, post back and give some more details.

Thanks for replying, Mike. I'm not using iCal at all to make any
events, merely assuming it operates as the go-between. The iCal
calendar on my powerbook is called "Entourage" so all the events are
showing up there (these were events that were originally from my
desktop mac). However, they are not finding there way to the actual
Entourage calender on my powerbook.

Hmm, so let me get this straight: you're creating events on your desktop Mac
and then use .Mac synchronisation to get the event to show up on your
Powerbook? If that's the case, do the events show up in iCal on your
Powerbook? And on your desktop Mac, for that matter? Apart from that, I'm
afraid I won't be able to help you, as I don't have a .mac account. Maybe
someone else can take over from here; wait and see if another user can
assist you.

Sorry this is so confusing. Yes, what you describe is correct. And yes,
the events DO show up in iCal on my powerbook. (And they are on my
desktop still, since that's where they originated). Hoping somone else
can chime in re: dot mac sync!

1. Like Michel Bintener, I haven't got an .mac account. I use a Palm
instead - and it synchronizes as it should [though to an IBM Thinkpad].
Nevertheless, I think I can help you.

2. In order for Entourage to synchronize with iCal, it has to be set up
for it. Go into Entourage-Preferences-General Preferences->Sync Services
and check »Synchronize events and tasks with iCal and .Mac«

My reason for this suggestion is that your desktop Entourage
synchronizes perfectly with you iCal and .Mac, and your iCal on your
laptop synchronizes as well. Just check the Entourage preferences on the
laptop.

Well, in that case, it's not really a .mac sync issue, since .mac
synchronises alright with iCal on your Powerbook. I'll give this one more
try before leaving it to the expertise of others: in Entourage, Preferences,
disable the "Sync events with iCal and Sync Services" option, then quit
Entourage. In iCal, make sure all the events are in the "Entourage"
calendar. Then restart Entourage, go to the Preferences and re-enable the
"Sync events" option. You'll be prompted with a number of choices, choose
either to delete Entourage's calendar items and import the iCal items, or
merge, if you prefer. Note that the first option will delete your previous
Entourage entries, and you might lose the events' categories. See if it
works now, as this should force Entourage to establish contact to the Sync
Services. As always, make sure that your data is backed up, in case
something goes wrong.

I followed your suggestions above, but still no luck:
1. Disabled Entourage preferences for "sync events with iCal and .mac"
2. Quite Entourage
3. Checked to make sure events in iCal are in the Entourage calender
4. Restarted Entourage, re-enabled the synce events option.
5. Selected "replace entourage items with sync services items"

Still no luck. Everything else is coming through - contacts, notes --
but no calender.
Is there direct MS support I should email this to?

Strange. As I said, you should simply wait from now on; someone else might
be able to help you, and these newsgroups are being monitored by Microsoft
employees. Good luck.

I'm not sure I'm following this accurately, but...
I have three Macs (a G4 PB, an iMac DV/SE and a G3 iBook); Entourage is only
on the PB. I also have .Mac. The PB is my "primary" computer. .Mac services
are on for all three machines (and, specifically, syncing ical on all
three). I am able to place entries in EITHER iCal or Entourage on the PB,
and with sync services on, my calendars will appear on multiple machines
(I'm not syncing address books across machines)
if I understand the set up, you have Entourage on two machines, and are
trying to do this:
machine 1 (your desktop?)- Entourage to iCal
(sync)
machine 2 (your PB)?-iCal to Entourage
if so, make sure you have an Entourage Calendar on iCal in both machines,
and that sync services are set in Entourage on both machines...if you place
a new event in Entourage on the desktop, it should go to iCal on that
desktop (yes?). .Mac should then sync it to the PB (via iCal) and place
those events in an Entourage iCalendar... which should then sync to
Entourage on the other machine...
I just saw this, and haven't had my coffee yet this morning, so hopefully I
didn't muck it up too badly...
Good luck,
Clay Hummer

yes, this is what I'm doing:

machine 1 (desktop): entourage > ical > .mac sync
mahcine 2 (powerbook): .mac sync > ical > entourage

Contacts and notes come throught, but Calendar does not.

Once you have entourage calendars on both iCals, maybe try and reset your
sync data (System Preference/.Mac/Advanced)... Given how flakey .Mac is on
occasion, I have to frequently unregister my computers from .Mac Sync, then
reset with my PB sending info to .Mac (->), and my others to receive info
from .Mac (<-)...
Shot in the dark, and since I posted this morning, I screwed something up
changing Entourage from a POP to IMAP, and so had to reset the whole
thing... So I may not know what I'm talking about (obvs...)

Clay - thanks! I followed your advice and reset the sync data. Now the
calendars are syncing!

.......BUT, strange behavior has resulted, which doesn't really matter.
Now on my Powerbook's iCal, I have a syncing calendar. But on my
desktop iCal, no calendar shows up (no entourage, no personal, no work,
nothing). Perhaps I am wrong in assuming everything goes through iCal?
(I seem to remember reading something about the data coming from
Truth). It's irrelevant to me, since I dont' use iCal, but thought it
was weird that this is happening on one machine.

C

Clay Hummer

If you reset sync, sometimes it does take a while (one machine at a time can
perform a sync) so depending on how often and/or whether you have automatic
sync on, it may appear as if like magic here in the near future (like, a
hour or so...)
