Syncing problem using Entourage -- Office 2004

Hi,
I don't know if this thread has been discussed recently or not.

Last week I updated from Office v.X to Office 2004 (standard) suite on my
PowerMac. Everything was ok with the updating as correct information was
imported from the v.X to the 2004 version. However one problem which I have
not seen previously with v.X when usinng Entourage is the extremely slow
sync/update with Calendar particularly. Its so slow, that I can't respond or
read e-mails while the spinning continues. BTW, I read (IMAP) my mail from
an MS exchange server which also synchronizes with my desktop for my
appointments. This is the same mail settings which I had used previously
with v.X version but didn't see such problems.

If this thread been discussed reasonably recently, I apologize for the
repetition, and if somebody would point me to the thread, I'd appreciate it.

I have already re-built the database and checked it for corruption. Any
other suggestions for increasing efficiency will be appreciated.

Thanks

That usually happens for the first complete sync, but I never
experienced any slowdown afterwards. Does the problem persist on your
Mac ??

Well, after I rebuilt the database the problem has minimized, but lately the
problem has reared its ugly head. However its nothing like the first
complete sync., but its still more than a trivial amount of time and it
hinders your tasks.
1) It happens at the beginning of the day on my desktop and at home at night
on my laptop. Both of which take time syncing because I am using it after a
while.
2) During the day it also happens from time to time, primarily on updating
the Calendar. The spinning wheel during the updates prevents from doing
anything -- reading e-mail or composing responses. Typically it lasts for
any span of time of about a minute or thereabouts.

I have to believe that it has to do with some of the Exchange settings and
preferences that I have set. If its updating Calendar which is causing it,
that isolates the preferences issue much more narrowly.

Hope you have some suggestions.
Thanks

Weird... I never get the spinning beachball ever again with Entourage
2004.

Synching seems to be slowing things down. The difference between your
setup and mine might be that my Mac is on a rather fast network access.

I really don't see what could do that in your settings. The only think I
could think of would be outdated Exchange server (and slow), or a slow
network connection. Can you find out whether your Exchange server is up
to date ???

Hi Corentin,

network connection. Can you find out whether your Exchange server is up
to date ???

We are using Exchange server 2003 and its regularly updated and the network
speed is 100 Mb so its more than adequate. So that's not the issue.

How can I turn off synchronization of the Calendar? In the sync options I
see categories to turn off/on, but no way to turn off syncing folders or
tasks. Any suggestions?

The way the calendaring is done is the address of the public folders (in
advanced settings) mail...edu/public and the DAV option is turned on since
SSL is required for access to exchange public folders.

Lastly, is a Mac virus a possibility? Since no other tasks are affected on
my Mac and I have no evidence to believe so, but its just a thought? The
latest version of a virus checker does run on the exchange server.

Thanks
