Table of contents from Outlined Numbered document

Jawahar Rajan

All,
I am trying to generate a table of contents from a
document that is heavily bulleted using Outline numbering.
eg
1.0 ASDFG
1.1 hjkl
1.1.1 mnbv
.............etc

I only want the table of contents to pick up the first two
levels.
Each Time I highlight the any level one bulet or level two
bullet and change it to a level 1 heading or level 2
heading respectively, I loose the number that goes with
the level. hence as a result the remainder of the document
is also effected.
Can some one suggest a way to preserve the numbering when
declaring the level 1 or level 2 bullets as headings.

also How can I make the table of contents it self as hyper
links (not the page numbers, these are done when the TOC
is made, but the text description it self I have see this
a few time and was hoping to do the same.

thanks
Jawahar

Hi Jawahar:

The sequence to use is, first attach the numbering to your
Heading styles, then by applying the styles you get the
numbering -- and the level is part of those styles by
default.

You could check out www.shaunakelly.com for instructions
on attaching the numbering.

When you insert the table of contents, you get a screen
where you can choose to have only 2 levels included.

In Word 2000, the table comes in, by default,
hyperlinked. However, 97 does not have that feature --
not by default, anyway, and I don't believe you can put it
in.
