Take a note from WordPerfect, and allow me to see all of the embeded codes
and control characters in MS Word documents. Let me decide about formatting,
etc. Also, let me turn off all of the damn nuscience stuff, like "smart"
tags, etc.

And let me communicate with someone from Microsoft who knows about the
products and who doesn't ask for money.

Try sending feed-back to MS, there's instructions in the help, if you can be
bothered to look!

MS incorporated a "Suggestion for Microsoft" type post for the web
browser they created to access the newsgroups on the MS site. If you
do use Help and click Contact Us their "Make a Suggestion link" is
directed to:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/com...ffice&pt=3a4e9862-cdce-4bdc-8664-91038e3eb1e9
which is posted in the newsgroups.

The main reason for this is peer review, in case someone is making a
suggestion on a feature that is already available, and so others can
vote on the suggestion. Microsoft has committed to responding to those
posts with the most votes. (Although I have yet to see a single MS
response...)

They are working on making the Suggestion posts easier to identify for
NNTP users along with a link you can use to vote on the posted
Suggestion.

Unlike WP, Word isn't a 'type stream' application and doesn't use the
same methods that WP does. If you want something similar to Reveal
Codes then you can obtain a third-party utility such as CrossEyes:
http://www.levitjames.com/crosseyes/CrossEyes.html

Although I helped beta test it and didn't really find anything it can
do that Word can't - especially in the current versions of Word
(2002/2003). You have several tools that allow you to reveal
information:

- Reveal formatting: Shift + F1
- Nonprinting characters: Ctrl + Shift + 8 (or click ¶)
- Reveal field codes: Alt + F9

Here are a couple articles that may be of interest to you:
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/WordVsWordPerfect.htm
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/RevealCodes.htm

As for turning off smart tags and such, go to Tools/AutoCorrect
options and you'll find most of it there.

Regarding communicating with someone who knows about the product,
those in the newsgroups aren't from Microsoft but we do know about
their products.
