Task pane best practices

Has anybody seen any documents that describe best practices for the use of
Excel's task panes? I'm looking for guidance on how to factor my
application's functionality across:

- task panes

- modal and non-modal dialogs

- command bars/ribbon

Seems like it would be good to have some principles that govern the design
process.
