Temp files created in save location

When a save is performed in Word, a temp file for that doc is saved in the
location the document resides, be it on the network, local drive, desktop,
etc. The application does not crash, but the temp file remains until
manually deleted. The environment variables are set to save to the local
(correct) temp directory, and the "file locations" in Word's options do not
have a listing for temp files. Any advice?

See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632 "Description of how
Word creates temporary files". Ordinarily, Word will
automatically delete the temporary files when the related Word
document is closed normally. But if Word crashes or if
user/network permissions are not set correctly, then the
temporary files sometimes don't get deleted automatically. It's
probably safe to manually delete temporary files that are more
than a few days old.
