Templates - forcing save as doc

I have created a template. I notice that when I click save, it automatically
saves the template. I want it to force save into a doc in 'my documents',
the way the 'normal' template behaves. I know that I'll forget to use 'save
as' eventually.
I'm using word 2003

When I've read tutorials they seem to suggest what I want to happen is the
normal behaviour but it doesn't seem to be with me. I don't think I've done
anything untoward; I've saved it in the default template folder as a dot.

Thanks for any assistance

To get a template to save as a document, you have to create a document based
on that template. If you open the template and save, it will save as a
template.

Going to File > New and choosing the template will create a document, not a
template as long as you make sure you have selected Document in the create
new section in the bottom right hand corner of the dialog.

That's not the way 'normal' templates behave. You can save a document as a
template but you cannot save a template as a document. Create new documents
from your template and you can save them as documents.
