Terrible performance in Ent 2004 with Exchange 2003

I am trying to switch to my Powerbook 1.25 GHz w/ 1.25 GB of ram. I
have Entourage 2004 installed and am having the same problems with S
L O W synching that others have complained about numerous
times. It takes WAY too long to get messages. It can take up to 5
minutes from the time I open entourage to the time I can open the 3 - 5
messages I have received. Now, here is the kicker - If I use Virtual PC
and run Outlook, things happen instantly. It is SOOOOO much faster in
outlook (2003) that it makes it hard for me to justify actually using
entourage!!!! What the heck is going on here? Does microsoft hide the
exchange protocol information from the MS Mac guys and make them guess
on how to implement it in Entourage? Why is the performance so
terrible!!?!!?!

P.S. It is a little better when I use IMAP but not much. There is
almost no benefit with using Entourage when I can get my mail almost as
fast with Apple's Mail.

Outlook uses MAPI and Entoruage is going through WebDAV. You can though
accelerate things by asking Entourage to only get the first xxx kb of
each messages and only downloading th rest upon reqquest (it's in the
account setup)

Corentin,

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, I am fast learning that
Entourage is not quite ready for the enterprise - or at least my
enterprise. I may just have to switch back to using Outlook. Receiving
emails up to 40 minutes after I get them on windows is unacceptable
performance. If you are listening, microsoft - please implement MAPI
for entourage and you will have a huge fan out of me.

E-mails are downloaded every 10 minutes on Exchange. That could reflect
a problem on the Webmail side of hte Exchange server...

I don't think that this problem is a server side error. Entourage is
really slow about synchronizing. I use an ibook at work, where
entourage seems to work okay. At home, on my G5, on waking from sleep,
entourage will never, NEVER, sync with the server appropriately. The
proress window appears regularly and nothing happens. If I go to
outlook web access to check my exchange mail, there are messages from
the day there and often new unread messages.
obviously, entourage works fine on my laptop at work, but it will not
synchronize at home. What i often do is quit the program. Then,
entourage will sometimes sync. Most of the time it does not.
Also, the program slows down my whole computer when it is "checking"
mail. Of course, no mail arrives in entourage, even though it has at
the server and in entourage on the laptop.
either there is something wrong with my installation, even though i
frequently repair the database and back it up, or entourage does not
play with the G5.
I have seen other comments about using the project center and how
that might affect synching. However, there are few to no emails
associated with my projects, so I don't think that is the issue.
Thanks for all of your help.

There is another possibility. I had a simila problem a few months ago
and figured out that the problem was that there were hundreds of
duplicate entries in my contacts on the exchange server. It took a
while, but once I went through (using Entourage) and deleted all of the
dups, Entourage started operating at a normal speed.
