Test won't overwrite blank cell to the right

I inadvertenly hit some keyboard combination that made all the
columns in my document the same width AND now all text typed in a
cell being cut off when it would normally run over the edge of the cell in
to the blank cell to the right.

I have selected the blank cells to the right of the cells with the text and
cleared all in case there was something there - but it doesn't help. In
fact every cell in the sheet behaves in the same way.

I have looked in Format Cell Alignment and nothing is checked in there.

I've set some setting for the entire sheet, but I'm stumped about what it
is. Can someone help?

Thanks
Joan

Create a brand new workbook. Copy a cell, then come back
to your sheet, select the concerned cells and "Paste
Special", checking the "Format" button. This should bring
your cells to the ordinary standard setting. Does it help
you out?

Oh, I should have though of it earlier: you probably
toggled the "Formula" display option. Not too sure about
the exact shortcut (it varies with the versions) but it
*could* be "Control-`" (you'll find in the HelpFile, I
suppose). You can also set it back to normal through
the "Preferences". This is a sheet setting, so other
sheets will not be affected.

Still wondering why I haven't thought of it...

Thank you so much Bernard!
It was the formula display setting!! And you are right about the
keyboard shortcut. I was trying to type à using the option key to get
the accent and must have hit the control key by mistake. You are a
genius to think of it. You have saved me hours of time trying to fix it.
