Text prints only with graphic

Text does not print from Word, Excel, Wordpad, Notepad, e-mail. Print head
moves and paper discharges but no print UNLESS a graphic is on page. PDF
files print OK, printer test page prints OK, First page of e-mail (has table
for addresses) prints OK.
This is a new development. If I put a smiley face on each page of document
it prints OK.
Use WinXP Home, Office 97
Have not found help in knowledge base -stumped!

Have you visited the manufacturer's web site to see if you have the most current
driver? Some printers have the option to send true type fonts as bitmaps, you might
check your setup.

Drivers good. I can print a doc on this printer from another computer on
network.
Thanks for KB reference. Can not print from Command Prompt. That suggests
system problem, which will take a while.
PS: KB pages print OK.
