The & function

Using the & function I create lets say A1:A12 in cell B1.
Now I want to simply use the text in this cell to create
an average or sum.

So I want SUM(A1:A12) which if you do SUM(B1) does not
work even though B1=A1:A12.

Does anyone know a way around this?

Try this:

=SUM(INDIRECT(B1))

use the INDIRECT function. e.g.
=SUM(INDIRECT(B1))
