The shortcut (.lnk file) is returned instead of the file or the folder that is
referenced by the path in the shortcut in the Open or in the Save dialog
box in Windows XP. i have tried many things to fix this. remove SP2,
repair XP, reinstall sp2. no luck! it is a real pain, since i have
shortcuts to all my files onthe desktop and they cannot be used to open or
save from inside any office program.

What happens exactly? Is the application attempting to open the
shortcut? If so what result do you see?

Also, what version of Office are you using?
