The spell checker seems to turn itself on and off at will leaving.

Trying to recheck the spelling does not work.

Pasting the entire document into a new document does work but that is about
a mickey mouse fix

the word.spelling.grammar newsgroup. I suggest you re-post there, with the
following information
- version of Word
- HOW spelling is not working
- any messages it produces
