timeout error 111 att secure server

I

Ikumi Abe

with Entourage 2004 when attempting to receive mail from att secure server
(ipostoffice.worldnet.att.net). It attempts to download messages or update
the message list for exactly 3 minutes and then gives me a 111 timeout
error.

When I originally set up Entourage X it did the same thing but didn't
timeout, it chugged for about 5 minutes, updated the message list and
never had the delay again. It seems to happen just the first time you set up a
new a account or migrate to a new machine.

Its driving me crazy, does anybody have any ideas. I'm running Mac OS
10.3.3, powerbook G4, Entourage 2004.

You have not said what kind of account, POP or IMAP; that would help.

IN the account setup for this account, click on Options and check "Allow
Online access...". The account will appear toward the bottom of your folder
list. Click on that.

What happens?

If you can see the messages there, perhaps you can try deleting the oldest
ones, or any very large ones, and then try reconnecting to download messages
in the normal way. Just a thought...

Hi Allen, Its a POP account.

I tried creating the online account to download messages that way. It
attempted to update the message list for 3 minutes then timed out again.

I also tried loggin on to ATT's webmail and deleting all but one message in
the hope that it be easier to update the message list. It didn't work, same
timeout problem.

Using Entourage X it updates the message list for about 6 minutes,
successfully downloads the message list and messages (even if there is only
1 message to update) and then works fine from then on in. But it doesn't
timeout after the first 3 mintues like Entourage 2004 does.

Do you know of a way to extend the timeout length in Entourage 2004?

No can do. To me, it sounds as though something is wrong with your settings,
because it should not take 3 or more minutes to update a message list that
has only one new message.

Apparently, with Entourage X, you are seeing this same excessive "update"
time. Perhaps you should double-check the settings with ATT. The updating
with only one message present should be almost instantaneous.

Another thing you might do is to look at the Error Log in Entourage to see
if there is anything useful there. Getting a TCP flow of the transactions
with the mail server would also be helpful (see instructions on
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/tcpflow.html>).
