TOC on an existing Word doc.

What is the clue to unlocking the mysteries of TOC on an
existing Word doc.? I'm attempting to update the TOC of an
existing test plan with NEW information and each time I
attempt touse the Udate TOC feature the TOC data defaults
back to the old data. HELP. Thanks!
