Too stupid for words but how do I...

Copying a simple formula like =sum(H2+K1)*17.5% down a column, how do I get
the K1 to freeze and not change to adjust for each new row.

I know this has got to be sooooo simple, and I must have known it once but I
cannot fathom it, really stupid. I've tried highlighting, right clicking,
search the drop downs, but I can't get there. Frustrated and needing help.

Thanks

K1 is a relative reference.
$K$1 is an absolute reference.

You can use a dollar sign to lock the column and/or row in a cell
reference. To lock the row reference, change the formula to:
=SUM(H2+K$1)*17.5%

Then you could copy the formula across to other columns, and it would
adjust the column but not the row reference.

To lock the column and row reference, change the formula to:
=SUM(H2+$K$1)*17.5%

For more information and examples, look in Excel's help for the topic:
'About cell and range references'

Also, in edit mode, select K1, and hit the F4 button to cycle till K1
becomes $K$1.

Also, remember that H2+K1 is the Sum, so "Sum" is not necessary.

=(H2+K1)*17.5%

Perhaps as an alternative:
=SUM(H2, K1)*17.5%

Thanks all, most enlightening. I don't know how I managed for the last "x"
years since I abandoned DOS without knowing this.
