After many frustrating months of using a search box in Entourage that was so tiny I could not see what I was typing, I finally realized I could customize the toolbar -- take icons out so there is more room for the search box.

Trouble is the customization doesn't stick. Definitely goes back to the default after closing and seems to at other times. I saw that someone else had this problem after doing a search, but since I could not tell if her problem was solved, I'm posting a similar issue.

What's the solution? How do I make the customization stick>

Each Entourage window has its own customized toolbar. A received
message and a message you are composing have separate toolbars, for
example. Is this, perhaps, what you are seeing?

No. I am talking about the main window I use: Inbox--Folders on My Computer.

When I close Entourage and reopen it, the changes I made in the toolbar have disappeared.

Let's test in a new Identity. Under Entourage in the Menu bar, select Switch
Identity. Make some changes to the toolbar. Quit Entourage and re-launch. Do
they stick? If yes, then it sounds like database corruption.

How to rebuild:

Make a duplicate in the Finder first as additional backup. A rebuild does
make a duplicate, but sometimes in the process the original and backup get
merged resulting in total disaster. It's rare but it happens.

I'm not sure if I understand the Switch Identity thing. I tried it but am not sure I did it right.

I also don't know how to make a duplicate in the Finder.

But thanks.

Did you get a new blank Identity with just the Entourage welcome message?
Did the problem occur in the new Identity?
I also don't know how to make a duplicate in the Finder.

Select any file by highlighting it. Under File in Menu bar select
"Duplicate" or use the shortcut Command-D. This will make a copy of that
file.

No, I didn't get a new blank Identity with just the Entourage welcome message. The window looked exactly the same as it always does. (MS told me to close all Office programs ti switch identities, which I did).

Of course I know how to duplicate a file. I don't know what file you're suggesting I duplicate or where to find it.

Thanks for your patience with me.

I should also add that the toolbar changes now seem to be sticking. Don't know what I did to make that happen, but perhaps I solved the problem in spite of myself.
