Tragic loss of document

My wife was attempting to open a word doc --- and she
received a message like "document already exists, would
you like to replace it?" (not exact message)...

Without thinking much about it, she clicked "YES".

Unfortunately, what happened was that the doc it replaced
it with was a COMPLETELY EMPTY document! The document
became 24KB (empty) and there was NO text at all.

I tried to find temporary versions of the doc --- but no
luck.

Any ideas? This is Word 2002 on Windows XP.
