Transferring everything from POP to IMAP

P

Pitch

I'm using the latest version of Entourage 2004 and transferring 9 of
my email accounts from POP to IMAP.

My question: I wish to replicate all of my Folders/Subfolders from
the "Folders on my Computer" to the first/top IMAP folder structure so
that these all stay up-to-date no matter which computer I'm on. There
are 178 total. So far the only method seems to be Right-clicking on
the appropriate IMAP folder, select "New Subfolder," wait a few
seconds for the folder to be created, then click-Enter on the name to
rename, wait a few seconds, rename that folder, and then wait 5 or 6
seconds for the name to update and upload. Is this the only method, or
is there a faster way.

Also, getting the contents of each folder in the 178 Folders on my
Computer into each of these new replicate folder in the IMAP section-
it looks like the only way to do this is to open each folder one at a
time, highlight all the contents and then drag them into their new
replicate folder and wait for each to upload. I'm pretty sure it's the
only way, but wondering if anyone's found something faster.

It's quite a process, but I think the ability to always be uptodate on
all ones computers will make it worthwhile.

Before you invest too much time on this, you might want to check to be
sure your IMAP server will allow you to hold that much data at once.

Good point. My DreamHost account, though, can hold a couple tetrabytes
at this stage, and I run a pretty lean database size, under 1 gig,
always removing and pruning. So I think I'm covered.

Cool - just wanted to mention it, in case!

I forgot to ask two other questions:

1. every time I create a new folder, it automatically adds 11 columns,
such as Online Status, Priority, etc. Even though I don't want the
majority of them. I know how to remove them, but dang, 178 times?
Isn't there some default setting? Or do I need to remove each column
one at a time, for 178 folders.

2. After I recreated about 12 of the folders/subfolders in the IMAP
section, I got the following error message:
"Cannot create this folder. The IMAP folder could not be created."
This is happening with top level folders as well as folders. I've
tried restarting Entourage, but still am stuck and not able to
continue adding more replicate folders under my different IMAP email
accounts. Is this normal, or perhaps an issue, some kind of limitation
with my ISP (DreamHost) and IMAP folders?

Have you considered doing this through your web interface. It might be
quicker. There could even be a duplicate function so that when you get the
folder structure set up you can just duplicate and then rename the folder.

I'm assuming you are using Preview pane below. Try using preview pane on the
right. This new view is much more user friendly IMHO. No more columns to
change too.

In Entourage, this works for POP account. I haven't tried for IMAP.

Any subfolders you make will have the same column set-up as its parent. For
example, set up your Inbox how you want it, then when you create new
folders, it will inherit the settings.

Sounds like it might be your ISP. To do what you are wanting to do with the
new IMAP accounts might require a change in the way you are organizing your
mail and not use folders but custom Mail views to sort your mail. Mail views
are the same as folders, it just doesn't seem that it is.

I gave some good thought to your idea about needing to alter how I was
doing POP, and I think you're right, Diane. Most of my POP habits
simply don't port over to the IMAP method. So, starting yesterday, I
just set things up so that all IMAP emails remain in each of their 11
Inboxes. Then, to avoid having to checking 11 folders, I created a
Custom View that checks all Inboxes. It's still bizarre for me to have
11 Trash folders, and 11 Sent, etc. but I'm starting to wrap my brain
around the concept.

Some of my most cherished Applescripts no longer work, such as the
brilliant Postpone/Delay combo, and the Delete Completely (which
avoids the Trash and gets deleted altogether) no longer works on
multiple selected emails. It only works on one at a time.

IMAPs a whole new animal. I'll try it out for a couple months, and if
it's just too different, I'll go back to POP.

Thanks for your ideas again.

Please do post back with your results. I've not used IMAP much myself.
Basically I use it for accounts that are nothing much more than spam
catchers and this way I don't have to download the crap errr spam into my
database.

Even though custom Mail views have been with us a few years now, it's still
a feature many have not explored fully. Old habits are hard to change.

Having users share how they use Entourage gives us an opportunity to see how
we can borrow from others to improve our own setups.

As for deleting your IMAP trash folder, look at the schedules for options.
