Trash folder views obscured

I'm using Entourage version 10.1.4 and it has been problem-free for the first few months. But in the last few days I've been able to see the contents of the trash folder--the window where the messages should appear is obscured with a grey striped background--and when I try choosing all and deleting, I get an error message (unknown 4362) and the program jams, requiring me to do a force quit. The fact that one message remains in the folder makes me very suspicious. What can I do to restore the view
I'm working on a G4 Power book with a Mac OS X if it matters.

It's possible that you have multiple copies of the Microsoft Database Daemon
running. Follow the steps here to remove extra copies.

If that doesn't work, that probably means that your database needs
rebuilding. First, go to Entourage -> Turn Off Office Notifications. Now,
quit Entourage, and then restart Entourage holding down the Option key.
When the Rebuild dialog box comes up, choose to do a Typical Rebuild.

You should also try deleting them with the Preview Pane turned off (View ->
Preview Pane). Sometimes that works to delete problem messages. You can
turn it back on when you're done. Or, run the "Empty Deleted Items Folder"
schedule (Tools -> Run Schedule -> Empty Deleted Items Folder).

Thanks! Rebuiliding the database got rid of the offending message and the problem.
