trouble finding calendars on exchange using entourage

E

Hi- hope someone has some ideas. Microsoft has been somewhat less than
helpful, and my school does not provide support for Entourage. I am
having trouble accessing calendars, the global address list, and items
inside public folders (and, presumably, scheduling events on the
server-based calendars) on my school's exchange server using entourage.
When I open the public folders folder, I can see nested public
folders, but, when I double click them, the program opens up the
general "folders on my computer" directory rather than providing access
to the archived messages. The calendars simply do not show up (this is
a much larger problem for me...). I have no trouble getting access
through Outlook on my PC laptop, and I based my setup on that process.
Any suggestions on solving this problem? Thanks so much, everybody.

You need to first select the Public Folder in the list and then subscribe to
it by pressing the "Subscribe" toolbar button. It should then appear in the
Folder List, where you can click it to access the contents.

Be aware that Public Folders containing non-mail information (like calendar
events and contacts) cannot be used with Entourage.

The information above assumes you have Entourage 2004 with an Exchange
account set up under the "Exchange" tab in Tools > Accounts. In the future,
please state which version of Entourage you're using.

When will iSync compatibility with Entourage be forthcoming? I heard in news
that MacBU was working on this.

Any chance of getting on the beta for this? I can test via WinISP.

Thanks,
Michael

I don't know. A press release earlier this year seems to indicate that
support for Sync Services is in the works, though no time frame is provided.

The article does mention an update for Entourage 2004 later this year, but
whether that will include support for Tiger's Sync Services I do not know.

In the meantime, you can check this site for synchronization options
available for Entourage users.

I don't know how you would sign up for a beta. The MacBU doesn't do public
betas.

Mickey- thanks very much for your help. Sorry to give you incomplete
info. I am using Entourage 2004 on Mac OS 10.4.2, and the university
is using Exchange 2003 Server. Unfortunately, subscribing to the
public folders does not work-- I get the same results as above.
Further, I still cannot see the calendars in the main public folders
directory... they just dont show up. If you have any further thoughts,
I would greatly appreciate the help

Current versions of Entourage do not support Contact or Calendar public
folders.

We are, however, working on improving our public folder support, and some
issues will be resolved in the update mentioned at MacWorld.

Wow- Thanks for the feedback-- I am a little disappointed I spent 2
hours on tech support yesterday being treated rudely by uninformed
M-soft employees. I suppose this means Entourage is virtually useless
but for the most basic users. Does anyone have any suggestions of how
I might access exchange calendars and public folders from a Mac?
Thanks

Wait for the update later this year, which has promised huge improvements in
this area.

I'm not sure how the lack of support for public folder Calendars and public
folder Contacts qualifies as "virtually useless but for the most basic
users". I understand that they are important for your scenario, and so does
our team.

If you have names of the Product Support specialists you talked to, I can
make sure they are (1) more informed, and (2) aware that a customer
considered themselves to be rudely treated. If you can let me know exactly
what the rude behavior was, it would be extremely helpful. As much as it's a
pain when you have to deal with any company's product support, even if they
do not have the information or answers you are seeking, it is still
incredibly important that you be treated with respect.

TIA,
nh

I wish I had taken their names, but, honestly, I got transferred 9
times... too many names to count. However, the last customer service
person, from the Pro Support group, put me on hold and never picked
back up when I asked to speak with her supervisor. I am disinclined to
use Microsoft products other than when absolutely necessary in the
future. I will simply wait for the GroupCal update which will allow my
ical to sync properly in Panther.

Right, these are the news articles I was talking about. I haven't heard an
update on this.

Since the MacBU currently doesn't do public betas perhaps they should start
thinking about having outside end users participate in beta testing these
new frameworks for sync with Entourage etc.

I think that Mac Messenger 5.x would have been a good candidate for end user
beta program external to Microsoft.

Well, it's not the end of "the second half of 2005" yet, is it? You can
expect to see an Office update before the end of 200 _without_ any previous
"news update": it will simply appear on schedule.
Since the MacBU currently doesn't do public betas perhaps they should start
thinking about having outside end users participate in beta testing these
new frameworks for sync with Entourage etc.

They _have_ many, many end users in a beta program. It's just not a _public_
beta program, which is unwieldy and not suitable for the number of staff
that they have to manage the beta program. You have to have been invited to
participate.
I think that Mac Messenger 5.x would have been a good candidate for end user
beta program external to Microsoft.

Indeed. But they have priorities. They know very well that everyone wants
audio and video in Messenger, and I'm sure they'll get around to it next
time. This time they seem to have gone for making Messenger work for large
enterprise corporations (who incidentally pay for those "corporation"
features of Messenger, unlike those of us who use the "Personal" features
for free). We will all benefit in the long run as Office Mac becomes fully
compatible with Office Windows in large corporations instead of being a
minor appendage. Hence the push for Exchange compatibility and Corporate
mode of Messenger at the moment. In the short run, it meant that these
Corporate features of Messenger was not suitable for a regular beta program,
since regular beta participants aren't in such large corporations - they
would have found other ways to test it - and thus undoubtedly missed some
other things along the way. But don't worry - Office gets tested very
thoroughly as a rule.
