Trying to manage multiple accounts

Email Client: pop

In previous email programs I was able to import all email at one time and look in the appropriate folders to see what email was personal, business, my wife's etc. I'm not sure I'm handling entourage correctly. It was confusing with all the email showing up in one place, so I established separate identities, but that seems to have caused additional problems, i.e. I have to close all Office applications before I can swap identifies, so I don't know that creating the separate identities was the correct path. I'm sure this has been answered, but I haven't been able to find a good answer to this. Thanks for your patience and any assistance.

Mutliple identities usually will make your life more complicated.

Why don't you use categories?? Youc an even do so automaatically i you
assign a category to specific contacts.
You can also create custom smart views based on categories to display
only the e-mails in relation to a certain category,

Use Rules. You can move all mail from Account A to Inbox A (you create a
folder Inbox A), or you can move mail according to a category rather than
the account that receives the messages.

From is in category family
Move message to folder family

There are 3 different kind of rules in Entourage:

Mailing List Manager (MLM)
Junk Mail Filter
Rules (custom rules you create)

They run in the order listed above. The custom rules also run in the order
they are listed. (top runs first)

Use the MLM for all lists. Use rules for the remainder. Try to use
categories instead of individual addresses when possible. When a new address
is added to a contact in the Address Book then it will automatically be
acted on by the rule if you use categories in your rules. See example:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/rules/example/rule002.html>

1) POP Rules act on a message ONLY when it first arrives in the Inbox (On My
Computer), NOT when it arrives in any other folder. Once it's moved to
another folder it won't be seen by rules.

2) IMAP Rules are meant to act on a message ONLY when it first arrives in
the IMAP INBOX, not when moved to another IMAP folder.

3) Exchange Rules act on a message ONLY when it first arrives in the
Exchange Inbox.

Each type of account has it's own rules. Click on the correct tab to check
your rules. (Mail (POP), Mail (IMAP) Mal (Windows Live Hotmail) Mail
(Exchange), News, Outgoing)

Thanks for both suggestions. I'm not familiar with how categories or rules work in entourage, but I'll investigate both. I appreciate the guidance.
