trying to use conditional formatting on a range of cells

What I am trying to accomplish is to apply a format to A when text is
inputted to EITHER B,C,D, or E, the format being a shade applied to A
I have tried IFTEXT but it will only let me do one cell at a time and there
are only 3 values you can apply to the condition of a cell. And I set the
cell shading already.
my condition read
Formula Is =IFTEXT($B$2:$E$2)
but that is not working

in cell A1
choose format / conditional formatting
choose formula is
type
=OR(ISTEXT(B1),ISTEXT(C1),ISTEXT(D1),ISTEXT(E1))

set your format
