typing chemical element names

How do I type chemical element names? An example HCO3- would be one hydrogen,
one carbon, and 3 neg oxygen.

First,

HCO then CTRL and the "=" key to toggel to subscript then type the three.

CTRL and the = key toggles the font between normal and subscript.
CTRL and Shift and the + key toggles the font betwenn normal and superscript
