Typing "r" in address line freezes entourage...

amudge

Starting last week, whenever I started to address an email beginning
with the letter "r", the program freezes and I have to restart
entourage or force quit. I thought it was something in the address book
so I tried to delete all contacts so I could import them back in but it
does the same thing and freezes when I try to delete contacts past the
r's. Even when I try a find in the address book list starting with "r",
it locks up.

Aso, when I type in the r...an error message pops up that says "The
Action could not be completed. Mail error". Then I close out of that
window and cannot perform anything else in entourage unless I quit and
restart it. This just started since before Christmas on my office
mac...my laptop is fine. I tried reinstalling all the software but it
didn't work. Any ideas out there? I probably have some type of virus
but my antivirus isn't picking it up so far.

Thanks.

Try rebuilding your database. Directions here:
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/database/rebuild.html>

If that does not fix the problem, you can check for a corrupt preference.
Recently a user on the Entourage talk list had a problem with no shift H.
The culprit was a bad preference called com.markzware.FC5.FontDBWtSys.

To test for a corrupt preference.....

Go into your home folder and take the ~/Library/Preferences folder, and put
all the files in there into a folder on your desktop called old_prefs. The
Finder will lock up when you move them out the first time. Force quit the
Finder. Now log out and back in, and you will see your Mac is now back to
defaults. Test Entourage , if it works, you know its one of the preference
files, somewhere. Start with putting everything back in that starts with
"com.apple" and log out/in.

Slowly, a few preference files at a time, move the old
ones back into place, and log out and back in, then test. Rinse and repeat
until you find the bad preference.

Another suggestion: User Font Finagler purge your font caches:
