Ugh, haven't seen this problem yet...

When starting Entourage I am told the database needs to be rebuilt. I
do so, first a typical, then an advanced. 75% through advanced rebuild
it quits and tells me the DB may not be rebuilt. The original file is
big – 3.07 GB.

I have turned off the database daemon. I have repaired permissions. I
have run the apple repair disk utility and Norton Disk Doctor. Nothing
seems to help.

I am using OSX 10.3.2. Entourage 10.1.4.

Really need to recover this some how. Please!

Can you open Entourage? If you can drag folders and subfolders to the
desktop. This creates an MBOX file that can be dragged back into Entourage
for access. Now you can delete those messages in Entourage . This will
greatly reduce your database and possibly allow the rebuild to complete.

Sometimes just removing the messages and dragging the MBOX file back in will
clear the corruption. Note I said sometimes....

I'm assuming you have a lot of free space on your hard drive. When you
rebuild it require double the size of your database to rebuild. This should
be contiguous space.

See the database page for other options to reduce the size of your database.

Thank you Diana for the help!

No, I can not open Entourage. That is my biggest frustration. I have
set up a new "main identity" and can open the app but I can not open
it with the old "main identity".

I forgot to mention that I believe I have enough room on the hard
drive, I have about 11 GB left for the little better than 3GB
Entourage DB. That should be enough, right? Contiguous space? Now that
may be another matter. I have not defrafed the HD for awhile (can't
find my NUM disk). Do you think that would do it?

It sounds like your database is kaput.

This is a way out suggestion...Open Apple's Mail and see if it will import
your corrupted identity. If it will, then you can import it back and you
should be ok.

Let me know if this works.

I would save the database. It's possible Entourage's next version would be
able to rebuild. Each version has had improved database abilities.

situation.

Have come across the same issues, MSE will not support databases over 3gb.
Rebuilding will sometimes partially work, giving you access to some local
mail. Frequent rebuilds will give you a backup that you can go back to and
potentially split up the local mail between multiple identities (using the
mbox dragging method), making sure that each identity is below 3gb. But, if
you don¹t have an older database, I have not been able to find a way to
recover the database.
