Unable to connect to outgoing e-mail server

After downloading (earlier this week) the latest security
patch for Outlook XP, I received the following
message: "Outlook is unable to connnect to your outgoing
(SMTP e-mail server. If you continue to receive this
message contact your Internet service provider."
I contacted my ISP and their advice was to restore my
previous version of Outlook (without the patch). I
haven't taken that step yet.
I can access my e-mail through Outlook Express, but I
prefer Outlook. Advice?

Delete and recreate your mail account. Ensure that if you are required to
sign onto the incoming server, that you set authentication on the server tab
of your account properties.
