unable to open one or more of the attachments

From any application (Adobe, Excel, Word) I try to send the open doc as an
attachment Outlook responds with "unable to open one or more of the
attachments" andopens a new message windows but the item is not attached.
If you send it anyway the message will be delived with the attachment. Any
Help would be great. Exchange 5.5 latest sp, win nt latest sp, Outlook XP.
