Unable to re-install printer on XP - "printer processor doesn't e.

I have a small Lexmark printer attached to a notebook by a USB. Lexmark was
unable to help when message was "uknown device" - so I purchased a new 2.0
USB cable. Subsequent message was "spooler not running". Lexmark gave
instructions regarding spooler. The message now reads "printer processor
does not exist" and the system window still shows an "unknown device". I do
have an installation disc. Lexmark, at the latest conversation, was changing
a port to a USB 00.1 during installation, to no avail.

Any deus ex machina out there, please?

I'd suggest asking in a newsgroup related to XP such as
microsoft.public.windowsxp.print_fax or microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware.
